A small whale washed ashore on Rexhame Beach in Marshfield on Thursday morning. Read the latest story here. It is among of growing number of whales that have been found dead along the South Shore and Cape Cod coast in recent weeks.

Wildlife officials are trying to determine what caused a humpback whale to wash ashore in Marshfield. Coast guard crews first spotted the dead whale’s body floating one mile off of Scituate yesterday.

In addition to the Marshfield whale, a dead whale washed up on Bayside Beach in Plymouth on Dec. 9. In Brewster, the carcass of another humpback whale washed ashore on the beach between Crosby Landing Beach and Linnell Landing Beach the weekend of Dec. 14.

Witnesses found the 5-10-year-old juvenile humpback whale in Kitty Hawk, near the Bennett Street Beach Access and reported it around 8 a.m., according to Marina Doshkov, stranding coordinator with the OBX Marine Mammal Stranding Network.

A juvenile female humpback whale washed ashore Friday, the Kitty Hawk Police Department said in a social media post. The whale was found near the Bennett Street Beach Access. The Virginia Aquarium has been contacted for assistance.
