A ground-breaking discovery has been made in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, almost 2,000 years on from being completely covered in ash. The wealthy city had 10,000 to 20,000 residents in its hay day, though following the two-day eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, it was preserved under a layer of ash.

Archaeologists have been given a new insight into what life in Pompeii was like after discovering a spa-like complex that has been described as a “once-in-a-century” find. What is thought to be one of the largest private bathhouses in the city has been uncovered after it lay buried underneath metres of volcanic rock for centuries.

The baths were unearthed in the so-called Regio IX, a large central area of Pompeii still unexplored where major archaeological excavations are ongoing revealing new interesting aspects of Pompeians' daily lives.
