Indonesia has asked Alphabet's Google and Apple to block Chinese fast fashion e-commerce firm Temu in their application stores in the country so it cannot be downloaded, a minister said on Friday.

The Indonesian government appears to have taken steps to potentially restrict Temu's presence in their market, asking Google and Apple to ban the app.

According to a government press release, the app was banned as it was not registered as an Electronic System Organiser (PSE) in Indonesia.

Apple has been asked by the Indonesian government to block the Chinese retailer Temu from the App Store, to try and protect small businesses in the country.

The operation of Chinese e-commerce Temu has been blocked in Indonesia after industry groups urged the government to take the app down over concerns that it threatened local micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

The country’s communications minister says that the app’s “factory-to-consumer” model threatens to undermine millions of small businesses.
