Police said the man broke into a home in Berwyn and killed two dogs, then later fired at officers in a nearby yard.
The 52-year-old man told police he forgot his sister-in-law was staying at his house, local news outlets reported.
"Witnesses reported hearing loud screams prior to a physical altercation, which escalated into gunfire," police said.
