The eruption at Kīlauea volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii has entered its fourth eruptive phase as of this morning, January 15, 2025, following low-level lava spattering that began around 5:40 a.m.

The eruption of Kilauea resumed this morning after a 12-day pause. According to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, lava began erupting from the Kilauea caldera early this morning, with low-level continuous lava spattering observed at 5:40 a.m., a sluggish lava flow emerging from the same vent at 9:15 a.m., and lava fountaining observed at 9:55 a.m.

According to USGS, the Kilauea volcano entered its fourth eruptive episode on Wednesday morning, January 15, 2025.

Kilauea’s summit was inflating Friday, indicating that magma was accumulating, according to Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientists, who said the on-again, off-again eruption that began before Christmas could resume by Monday.

Kilauea, the world's most active volcano mass located on the island of Hawaii in the U.S., has erupted again. This is not the first time the volcano has shown activity this year, though the United States Geological Service (USGS) has lowered the alert level for the current eruption from RED to ORANGE.

According to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, over the past day, vents in the southwest portion of the caldera have continued producing a fan of lava flows covering the southwest portion of the crater floor, with sustained lava fountaining as high as 100 feet.
