VERO BEACH, Fla. -- Former Major League Baseball commissioner Francis T. “Fay” Vincent has died, MLB announced Sunday. He was 86.

Fay Vincent, who became baseball commissioner in 1989 and then was forced out three years later by owners intent on a labor confrontation with players, has died.

Vincent played a major role in resolving MLB's dispute with Pete Rose over Rose's gambling activities, which resulted in baseball's all-time hit leader being suspended indefinitely from the sport.
