RSV, respiratory syncytial virus, usually peaks in December and January while infecting the nose, throat and lungs, usually causing mild, cold-like symptoms, the CDC says. Those symptoms make it difficult to distinguish it from the common cold, COVID-19, or influenza.
How Bad Are COVID, Flu and RSV This Winter?
During the COVID pandemic, RSV showed a slightly odd pattern: like flu, it basically disappeared in the 2020–2021 season, likely because of masking and social distancing. But in 2022–2023 it came roaring back and had a large, early peak during the fall. Last year saw a significant surge as well, but it was closer to the timing of a typical season.

With respiratory illness season at its peak, the latest CDC data shows a significant rise in flu cases nationwide, while COVID-19 cases decline and RSV activity continues to wane. According to the CDC’s latest FluView report,
Flu, COVID, and RSV: It's Peak Season
For the week ending Jan. 25, seasonal flu activity remains high and increasing. Clinical laboratories tested 129,378 specimens for flu viruses. Of these, 29.4% were positive. Among the positive results, influenza A accounted for 36,471 (95.9%) of positive flu cases, and influenza B accounted for 1,571 (4.1%).
Flu, RSV, COVID-19 cases increasing across the state; 117 flu-related deaths this season: NCDHHS
There have been 117 flu-related deaths in North Carolina this season. According to NCDHHS, 51 new flu deaths were added to the statewide dashboard on Wednesday, but the newly added deaths occurred over the last few weeks as there are often delays in reporting.
