A 39-year-old man and an 8-year-old boy have died after they were initially rescued in the waters off Cowell Ranch State Beach, south of Half Moon Bay, California State Parks officials said.

HALF MOON BAY, Calif. -- A man and a boy died after being pulled from the ocean at Cowell Ranch Beach in San Mateo County on Sunday afternoon, according to California State Parks officials.

Firefighters say a boy was swept into the ocean at Cowell Ranch State Beach, and a man went into the water after him.

Both were residents of Santa Clara, an approximately 1 hour drive from the beach where they drowned. The accident occurred in the waters off Cowell Ranch State Beach, just south of Half Moon Bay.
