The two Democratic senators representing Laken Riley’s home state of Georgia remain noncommittal on legislation bearing her name nearly a year after she was murdered by an illegal migrant. The Senate is slated to hold a procedural vote on the Laken Riley Act,

The Laken Riley Act has taken a second major step toward passage as the Senate overwhelmingly voted to allow for debate on the measure. The bill is named after the nursing student killed by a Venezuelan national on the University of Georgia campus. The bill would allow for the detention of illegal immigrants arrested on charges including burglary.

The U.S. Senate is expected to vote on the Laken Riley Act Thursday afternoon and at least one of Georgia’s Senators has confirmed they’ll vote to pass the bill.

The bill would require immigration officers to detain immigrants who are suspected of minor theft and cede some federal immigration enforcement power to states.

The Laken Riley Act on Monday cleared a second procedural hurdle in the Senate as talk turns to an amendment push by Democrats in order to potentially make alterations to the bill. Senators voted 82-10 on the motion to proceed to the legislation,

On Thursday, the U.S. Senate voted to move the Laken Riley Act forward to another art of the legislative process.
