Organizations across the New York City area are marking Martin Luther King Jr. Day with special events honoring the civil rights leader's legacy.This year, the federal holiday also falls on Inauguration Day.

Brevard honored Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday with a parade and other commemorations. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, also known as MLK Day, honors the American civil rights leader's birthday, although it rarely falls on that actual day. King was born Jan. 15, 1929, but the federal holiday is observed on the third Monday in January.

For newly-minted Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins, who was sworn in Monday, Jan. 6, Martin Luther King Day holds special significance. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "unshakable commitment to justice, equality and non violence changed the course of history," Jenkins said in a news release.
