New York has ordered a weeklong shutdown of all live bird markets in New York City, Westchester and Long Island after seven cases of avian flu were detected at bird markets in the city.

All live poultry markets in New York City, Westchester, Nassau, and Suffolk counties were temporarily shut down on Friday after seven bird flu cases were detected, New York Governor Kathy Hochul said.

In New York state, the five-day closure of live poultry markets in New York City and three counties—Westchester, Suffolk and Nassau—will allow them to be cleaned and disinfected to help prevent spread of the disease, New York Governor Kathy Hochul said in a statement.

The order also temporarily shuts down all bird markets in Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk counties after 7 cases were detected in NYC poultry.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul ordered a temporary closure of live-poultry markets after bird flu was detected in the outer boroughs of New York City. The order, signed by Hochul on Friday, requires the markets to close down between Feb. 7 and Feb. 14 as facilities undergo a complete disinfection process.

There’s currently no mandate from the state for chicken markets to shut down. However, the state’s Department of Agriculture has asked for those businesses to do a voluntary cleaning.
