You may start to see less and less red kettles outside of grocery stores. That's due to a low volume of volunteers, amongst other things. WCCO's Erin Hassanzadah has the story.

Salvation Army bell ringers are reporting fewer coins in kettles this year. The organization had set a goal of raising $21 million this holiday season in the Chicago area. Holiday fundraising pays for 75% of the organization's annual operating budget.

The Salvation Army says it's a proven fact that donations decline when the bells aren't ringing. Fewer volunteers mean fewer rings and fewer dollars raised.

The Salvation Army Bell Ringers had one last day to receive as many donations as they can for their red kettle campaign. Starting in November every year, Salvation Army volunteers stand beside their Red Kettles and ring their bells in hopes that their community will put a donation in the kettle.

The Rochester Salvation Army Red Kettle campaign is winding down and the kettles have been put away, but the organization says there is still time for the community to help it meet its goal for 2024.
