Anna Maria Island: See famous Florida beaches before and after Hurricane Helene hit
A week after Hurricane Helene’s storm surge swept ashore and devastated Anna Maria Island, the popular Southwest Florida tourist destination is still digging out of the wreckage. Signs of destruction are everywhere, from beaches depleted of their famous crystal white sand to ruined streets, landmarks, businesses and homes.
Anna Maria Island, a seven-mile barrier island off Bradenton on Florida’s Gulf Coast, is about a four-hour drive from Miami.
Block after block, piles of debris line the streets in front of homes. Residents on Anna Maria Island are still surrounded by the mess left behind by two hurricanes.
