"The change of seasons causes surface melting far inland from the coastal ice front," glaciologist Christopher Shuman said.

As the ice melts, the pressure in the magma chambers eases and the compressed magma can expand, leading to eruptions. Anatarctica has 140 hidden volcanoes.
