The educational curriculum in Bangladesh is undergoing significant changes. The revised textbooks will attribute the declaration of independence in 1971 to Ziaur Rahman instead of 'Bangabandhu' Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Supporters of the Awami League widely believe that Mujibur Rahman made the announcement, while Ziaur Rahman, an Army major and later a sector commander during the Liberation War, simply read out the declaration under Mujib’s instructions.

The Muhammad Yunus-led interim government has decided to revise the delta nation’s history textbooks to replace ’Bangabandhu’ Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as the declarer of independence with Ziaur Rahman, the leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and former president.

According to the report, the new textbooks have also removed the title "Father of the Nation" for Mujibur Rahman.

Researcher Rakhal Raha, entrusted with making the changes, said they tried to free the textbooks from ‘exaggerated, imposed history’.

The new textbooks for primary and secondary students will now state that Ziaur Rahman declared the independence of Bangladesh in 1971.
