A new text messaging scam targets city residents who are receiving bogus alerts of overdue parking ticket fines, according to police.

Boston police are investigating the death of a man who was found shot in a parking lot Saturday night. Officers responded to 140 Main St. in Charlestown shortly after 10:30 p.m. for a report that a pedestrian had been hit by a car, police said in a press release. At the scene, they found a man lying on the ground in the parking lot.

"Please be advised that these messages were NOT sent by the City of Boston," the Boston Police Department wrote.

According to Boston police, fraudulent messages are being sent out claiming that recipients have overdue parking ticket fees. “Please be advised that these messages were NOT sent by the City of Boston,” Boston Police wrote in a release.
