The top shows and movies new on Netflix this week are once again headlined by the return of a surprise hit from 2023.

By its standards, the streamer's lineup of film originals in January is surprisingly slight. There are still a few Netflix-exclusive movies worth recommending this month, though, and the service is making up for its slim pickings of originals with a batch of exciting streaming acquisitions that is practically bursting at the seams with modern classics from the past 30 years.

When it comes to the best new sci-fi franchises of the past decade, Dune is sure to rank high on every expert’s list. Netflix secured streaming rights to the sequel over the holiday season, and the first installment arrived on January 1st. However, it’s leaving the platform after just one month, although you’ll still have some time to catch Part 2.

January has been a great month to have an Apple TV+ subscription if you like series about people trying to unravel strange mysteries, with both Silo and Severance debuting their second seasons. Now the trend continues with Prime Target, a brand new show about a mathematician who becomes a hunted man for mysterious reasons.

This month’s selection of movies includes an underseen rock opera, one of the best movies of the 2000s, a paranoid thriller about American misdeeds abroad, and a nice pre-Oscars catch-up on one of Timothée Chalamet’s best performances.
