A police officer was shot in North Philadelphia by a man who fled a traffic stop and then took his own life, officials said.

The officer has since been released from the hospital, and officials credit his bulletproof vest with protecting him from a more serious injury.

Philadelphia Police said the shooting happened around 1 a.m. along the I-95 south offramp to International Airport.
