A Canadian “Super Scooper” aircraft fighting the Palisades Fire in Los Angeles had to be grounded after it hit a drone flying in restricted airspace over the devastating blaze on Thursday, the local fire department said.

The CL-415, originally manufactured by Canadair and now by Bombardier, is an amphibious aircraft designed specifically for aerial firefighting. It gets its nickname, “super scooper,” from its ability to land rapidly on a body of water, quickly take on up to 1,620 gallons of water and then take off again.

The Federal Aviation Administration was forced to issue a reminder on January 9th, shortly after an unidentified civilian drone collided with a Canadair CL-415 Super Scooper at approximately 1PM PST over the Palisades firestorm.

A firefighting aircraft was grounded after it was struck by a civilian-flown drone while over the Palisades Fire on Thursday. The collision, which involved a Canadair CL-415, happened at around 1 p.m.

The plane landed safely but is out of service because the collision damaged its wing, a Cal Fire spokesman said.
