Finance Committee Chair Ald. Pat Dowell (3rd Ward) failed to hold a vote on the agreement as scheduled Monday, an indication that the deal does not have enough support to advance to the full City Council.

The family of a man who was killed last year in a West Side shootout with Chicago Police officers has reached a tentative $1.25 million settlement agreement with the city. The settlement proposed by city attorneys for the family of Dexter Reed is still subject to approval by aldermen.

City Council members said they were ready to debate the Dexter Reed settlement and they were shocked when it was passed over — presumably because the votes were not there to pass it. Megan Hickey reports.

Reed's family and city attorneys agreed in November to a $1.25 million settlement over the fatal traffic stop, but they need the approval of the City Council, which showed hesitation Monday.

Some aldermen say the settlement will send a dangerous message, while others say it will save the city money, and time, in the long run.

Good afternoon, Chicago. A controversial settlement remains in legislative limbo after a deal to award $1.25 million to the family of a man shot and killed by police after firing at officers first was not brought up for a planned vote today.

The settlement agreement also would include "non-monetary relief" that would set new restrictions on traffic stops for the Chicago Police Department, sources said.
