After offering its customers free NACS adapters for Tesla's Superchargers, Ford is telling its customers to stop using them, according to a service bulletin spotted by InsideEVs. Ford has advised its electric vehicle customers to stop using Tesla NACS adapters due to concerns that some units could cause slower charging speeds or damage the charging port. The automaker issued a bulletin warning of a “potential issue” with the adapters,

Ford is pulling the plug on its NACS charging adapters (for use with Tesla Superchargers) for a minute as it takes a look into potential dangers that are related to their use with Ford vehicles. The company has officially started a recall in an effort to prevent customers from any related risks.

Some Ford owners are being told to stop using their Tesla Supercharger adapter until a replacement can be shipped.

But that’s changing. In 2023, Tesla announced that it was opening up much of its charging network to owners of non-Tesla EVs, a move that would help the automaker qualify for a slice of the $7.5 billion earmarked for EV charging network expansion in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Ford EV owners should follow the link on Ford’s notice to make sure it has the right address on file. If it is, they won’t need to do anything else to get their replacement, but if not, the company says customers need to update their address by October 24th.

It is imperative that we receive all adapters affected to reduce the risk of potential vehicle damage,' Ford tells affected customers in an email.

The NACS adapter flaw was disclosed to affected EV owners earlier this week. Drivers who receive a notice should stop using their free NACS adapter immediately. Replacement adapters will be shipped the week of October 28th at no cost.
