San Francisco City Atty. David Chiu announced a lawsuit on Friday against the Trump administration over the White House's recent crackdown on sanctuary cities.

During his previous administration, Trump also moved to withhold federal funding from sanctuary cities. Multiple appeals court panels, including those composed entirely of Republican appointees, ruled the executive branch lacked the power to override funding decisions made by Congress.

Illinois Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker says the state follows the law. President Donald Trump has often singled out Chicago and Illinois, which have some of the strongest sanctuary laws in the U.S.

The suit challenges state and local laws that limit police from cooperating with federal immigration authorities.
