Umpire Pat Hoberg, whom Houston Astros fans might remember from his perfect game behind the plate in Game 2 of the 2022 World Series or his 2019 ejection of Justin Verlander, was fired by Major League Baseball on Monday for violating its gambling rules.

Hoberg had originally been fired on May 31, 2024, after MLB had launched an investigation in February of that same year after receiving information that he had opened a sports betting account with a sportsbook in his own name.

Hoberg, MLB said, was fired for failing to “uphold the integrity of the game” when he shared sports betting accounts with a friend who is a professional poker player. Hoberg also apparently intentionally deleted messages that were central to MLB’s investigation into his conduct.
