Organized into 10 District Offices nationwide, OFO carries out FSIS’ food safety mission in processing and slaughter facilities across the country. OFO is also responsible for managing all certification work including export verification.

The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is responsible for ensuring that meat, poultry, and processed egg prod-ucts produced in Pennsylvania are safe, wholesome, and accurately labeled. Federal inspection personnel maintain a presence in over 6,200 establishments.

This program reimburses expenses for opening or expanding very small meat and poultry operations. It also covers the cost of obtaining a grant of inspection from USDA Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS). Grant applications must be submitted online through the PA Department of Community and Economic Development Electronic Single Application.

Food Safety is an important area for every single person in Pennsylvania. Every year, one in six Americans suffers from a food-related illness. Preventing food-borne illnesses will improve public health and avoid the costly disruptions of the food supply system caused by illness outbreaks.

Processors must meet all USDA/FSIS inspection exempt requirements. Processors are prohibited from selling adulterated or misbranded product as defined by FSIS. Poultry is sold intrastate only. Rabbit not under USDA voluntary inspection may be sold interstate if under FDA inspection.
