With gen z’s anti tech movement, I’m surprised there isn’t a competitive market out there for E ink phones. Seems like a great compromise between functionality (maps, WhatsApp, calls, internet browsing, photos) without the busy nature of normal smartphones

(the list of the apps is also hard to use, as clicking the little x to close app instead of swiping up is fiddly.)

Hi all, I'm wondering what my current options are for an eink (B&W or colour) smartphone as of 2024? As far as I'm aware the Hisense phones are the only options, but I don't love the idea of using a Chinese, probably spyware containing phone, and I know Google et. al. are no better in that regard, which is why I'm currently using a de-Googled smartphone.

Oct 27, 2021 · And while I LOVE e-ink displays. OLED phone screens are pretty damn good. Especially now that iPhone is 120hz. Pretty easy on the eyes. Also never have had any issues using a phone outside for YEARS now, modern glass and screen protector options and with how bright they can get, non-issues. Still prefer my e-reader to read on.

It is my understanding that all e-ink devices look amazing in broad daylight, my A5 is no exception. It is also my understanding that all Hisense e-ink devices are highly reflective, but the A5 comes with a matte screen protector that keeps reflection from showing, but you can still see the reflective surface on the top edge of the screen, where the screen cover doesn't fully cover.

Jan 7, 2023 · Been using a Hisense A5 for more than 2y now as my only phone, without the google services (I still use Aurora, see link below). Don't own a tablet, just a computer on the side. So far, I love it and if the phone ever dies I'm planning on staying on the e-ink side of things.

Jun 23, 2021 · q: what is the appeal of a colour e ink phone when your regular smartphone is far better? a: None, unless you like ereaders so much you want a phone that acts like them (clunky, low refresh rate, ghosting, missed finger swipes). IMO, the eink is much better as a compliment (dual screen) rather than a main driver (single screen).

Jun 19, 2022 · In comes the Hisense A5. It's an e ink smartphone. Suddenly all of those things that led me on big distraction binges have become very unappealing. Watching a video on this thing is absolutely miserable. Goodbye long YouTube watching sessions.
