But the resurrection of Jesus Christ changed all that. It gives purpose and meaning to life, and life’s greatest joy comes from discovering His will and fulfilling it. His resurrection also gives us hope—hope right now, and hope beyond the grave. Only the Lord has conquered death and made it a source of freedom where it once brought only fear.

One reason Jesus stayed on earth for 40 days after His resurrection instead of ascending immediately into heaven was to demonstrate to His followers that He truly was alive. After all, they knew the Roman authorities had put Jesus to death, and that His body had been taken down from the cross and sealed in a tomb.

Yes, Jesus repeatedly told His disciples that He would be put to death, but then would be raised from the dead. He promised, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men. They will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised to life” (Matthew 17:22–23).

The reason is because these two events — Jesus’ death and resurrection — were God’s way of bringing salvation to the human race. This certainly seemed to be the Apostle Paul’s conviction. On one occasion, he was in jail awaiting trial for his faith, and he knew that his life might soon come to an end. But he didn’t face this possibility with fear. In fact, he welcomed it, because he was convinced that at death he would go immediately to be with the Lord.

Why was Jesus’ death unique? It was unique first of all because of who He was: God in human flesh. Throughout history tyrants and megalomaniacs have claimed to be divine—but only Jesus Christ truly was God, coming from Heaven and then returning to Heaven.
